Deputy Director General of ANP claims Romania’s prison system has 8,500 accommodation places deficit

Romania’s prison system has a deficit of 8,500 accommodation places compared to the provisions of the legislation imposed by the human rights which establishes a minimum 4 square meters to be assigned for each convict, Deputy Director General of the National Administration of Penitentiaries (ANP) and Penitentiaries Superintendent Dan Halchin stated on Wednesday in a press conference held in Slanic Moldova.

He stated that the most viable solution for covering this deficit is to build several new pavilions in units that are already existing and not creating new prison units. He added that the main problem which the prison system confronted with last year was the lack of personnel, because of the massive departures from the system. Deputy Director General of the National Administration of Penitentiaries Dan Halchin attended on Wednesday, in Slanic Moldova, the activity review meeting of the penitentiaries in the north-eastern region.
